Grads Celebrate Achievements at Spring Commencement

PHSC will host spring commencement on Wednesday, May 6, in the Physical Fitness Center at West Campus. Two commencement ceremonies will accommodate the growing number of graduates earning their Associate in Arts (AA), Associate in Science (AS), Applied Technology diploma or certificate. The morning ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the afternoon commencement will begin at 4 p.m. The events will stream live online at http://phsc.edu/news/webcast-live.

This year’s spring graduates include many ambitious students and some who have encountered adversity in pursuit of a higher education.

Skyler Brake, 20, of Wesley Chapel, speaker for the morning commencement, will receive his AA degree. Brake is a student ambassador and member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). “My life changed drastically as a student leader,” said Brake. He is passionate about employing scientific principles to better our future and enjoys hydroponic gardening. He plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at the University of South Florida and hopes to work in the agricultural industry.

Diana M. Shanks, 18, of New Port Richey, student speaker for the afternoon ceremony, is a dual enrollment student (Ridgewood High School) and will graduate from PHSC with an AA degree. Shanks took martial arts, ran track, and participated in drama club and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in high school. At PHSC, Shanks served as president of the Campus Crusade for Christ, as senator and vice president of the West Campus Student Government Association (SGA) and PTK member. She will attend Flagler College, St. Augustine, Fla., and major in strategic communications with a double minor in English and pre-law.

B.J. Reynolds, 63, of Tarpon Springs, will receive an AA. “Graduating from college has always been on my bucket list, but I didn’t think it would take this long!” said Reynolds. Marriage, children and a career intervened but when her son graduated with a full scholarship in 1992, she capitalized on the savings. “I’ve enjoyed college immensely; it used to be I was the same age as most of the students—now, I’m usually the oldest and often older than the professors,” said Reynolds. “But, it never seemed to matter; I always fit right in.” Reynolds plans to retire and travel the world in 2017 with her husband. She will pursue her bachelor’s online, one course at a time.

Joseph Conte, 20, of Spring Hill, is an SGA member and Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Spring Hill chapter president—a position that “heightened my communications and public speaking skills and my understanding of business,” said Conte. He was elected incoming District IV vice president for the PBL association. “I want to make an impact by creating strong business leaders,” said Conte who receives his AA degree with plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in supervision and management at PHSC.

Julie Doyle, 45, of Tampa, served as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class where she met her husband, now a retired U.S. Marine, while stationed in Beaufort, S.C. The couple transferred to Okinawa, Japan, where Doyle received an honorable discharge. The financial burden, late-night study sessions, and guilty feelings resulting from spending less time with her four daughters and husband, made returning to school difficult. Doyle is receiving an AS in nursing and plans to pursue a bachelor of science in nursing. She hopes to work on the Bone Marrow Transplant inpatient unit at Moffitt Cancer Center.

Mitchell Krempa, 22, of Port Richey, will receive an AS in drafting and design and a certificate in AutoCAD (computer-aided design software). “I enjoy assisting others with designs,” said Krempa. The Florida TRADE Grant program helped Krempa secure a paid internship position at Earth Tech where he designs construction maps. Krempa may pursue advanced degrees in architectural design after gaining real-world experience.

Diana Aurelio, 43, of Spring Hill, PTK Spring Hill chapter vice president, will earn an AA. Aurelio is chapter president of Psi Beta (psychology) honor society and a member of Legal Eagles and PBL. Aurelio, a wife and mother, put her career on hold to raise two sons. Aurelio recently spent a week in Italy studying humanities through the study abroad program. “The art and architecture are truly breathtaking. It was rewarding to experience another culture in person, which is so different than seeing it on a slide in a classroom,” said Aurelio. Currently a paralegal, she plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology at Saint Leo University.

Kathy MacLenna, 48, of New Port Richey, will receive an AA with honors. MacLenna gained management experience in her 27 years at the Pasco County Tax Collector office. In 2013, with the support of Tony, her husband of 28 years, MacLenna resigned her position to become a full-time student. “I thought I was too old, but with my family’s support I decided it was time to further my education.” MacLenna works as a student development assistant at PHSC and, in her spare time, runs three to four 5Ks each year. MacLenna plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree. “As I watch my mother suffer with dementia, I want to keep my mind active. Being a student has allowed me to do that,” said MacLenna.

Amanda Rust, 26, of Land O’ Lakes, a first generation college graduate, earns her AA. Rust is a wife to an active duty United States Coast Guard aviation maintenance technician and mother to a 6-year old daughter. Also, she is in the midst of adopting her seven year old nephew. Rust is a member of PTK and the Pasco-Hernando American Sign Language Association (PASLA), and volunteers for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and A.F.I.R.E. of Pasco County, a day training program for developmentally disabled adults where her sister attends. Rust plans to pursue an AS degree in radiation therapy—a decision made after her step-father, diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, received a new form of radiation therapy.

Sarah Ruggieri, 31, of Brooksville, graduates with an AS in paralegal studies. Ruggieri, a single mother, juggled her two daughters’ busy schedules along with her own classes while working as a PHSC student-assistant and, at times, holding a second job. Ruggieri also received her AA in May 2012. She is actively involved in Girl Scouts, serving as a “Cookie Mom” for four consecutive years. Ruggieri, a member of the PHSC Legal Eagles club, hopes to find a job in family law.

Alyssa Pawlik, 21, of Wesley Chapel, will receive an AA degree. She is a PHSC student ambassador, and a member of PTK and SGA. Pawlik also is a volunteer for the past six years for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. “My volunteer experience has provided a great support system with my dad’s recent stage 4 pancreatic cancer diagnoses,” said Pawlik. She plans to attend USF to major in elementary education.

Joshua Pellot, 24, of Spring Hill, is a member of PTK and earns his AA degree with honors. “Almost everything I’ve achieved thus far would have never happened. From middle school to high school, I was the target of bullies,” said Pellot. “I endured harassment nearly every day, until I finally snapped and tried to end my own life. The abuse caused so much damage that my parents pulled me out of school,” said Pellot. Eight years later, he found a safe haven—PHSC. Pellot discovered his passion for math when he became a tutor at PHSC’s Teaching-Learning Center. “Everything from math’s structure and form to its philosophy fascinates me. I can see the artistic beauty in math, and it has me hooked.” Pellot, the first in his family to pursue a bachelor’s degree, is accepted in the mathematics program at the University of Florida, Gainesville.

Caitlin Machado, 19, of Spring Hill will receive her AA degree. Machado said, “Creativity is where I live and breathe. I’ve always loved movies and TV and it’s been my dream to direct and produce life changing shows and films for the world.” She will major in film production and directing at UCF while building her film portfolio as a university student.

Graduation speakers include: District Board of Trustees Vice Chair Morris Porton in the morning ceremony, District Board of Trustees Chair Leonard Johnson in the afternoon ceremony; Regina Mirabella, Professor, Nursing (ADN) and Faculty Senate President;Reflections speaker Cheryl O’Berry, Professor of Business Administration and Office Administration; and student speakers Skyler Brake (morning) and Diana Shanks (afternoon). Approximately 334 degrees and certificates will be conferred at the ceremonies. An estimated 728 spring graduates are eligible to participate.

PHSC Loses Final Regular Season Game

Pasco-Hernando State lost 5-0 at South Florida State College in Avon Park on Saturday afternoon. PHSC managed only four hits in the game and starter Danny Rodriguez (10-3) took the loss. Rodriguez pitched six innings allowing only three hits and three unearned runs. He walked four and struckout four. PHSC closes out the regular season 29-13. They will begin preparing for the NJCAA Southeast District Tournament that runs May 8-12 in Kinston, North Carolina. The winner of the tournament advances to the NJCAA College World Series in Enid, Oklahoma that runs May 23-30.

PHSC Rally Comes Up Short

South Florida State College held on to defeat Pasco-Hernando State 7-6 at the West Campus. PHSC trailed 6-3 after six innings, but cut the lead to 6-5 heading into the ninth. SFSC scored an unearned run to take a 7-5 lead, but catcher Tim Helser answered with a home run leading off the bottom of the ninth. SFSC retired the next three batters to get the win. Alex Kranick led the hitters going 3 for 5 with a double and RBI. Kranick raised his team leading batting average to .349. The team will wrap up the regular season tomorrow at South Florida State. Danny Rodriguez (10-2, 1.56) will get the start.

PHSC is offering several summer athletic camps: basketball, baseball, fastpitch softball and volleyball. All athletic camps will be held at the West Campus in New Port Richey

The camps are directed by PHSC head coaches with assistant coaches and college athletes. Sessions include fundamental skills, individual player development and team competitions. Fees include registration, camp T-shirts and instruction.

Boys and Girls Basketball Camp (Directed by PHSC Head Basketball Coach Micheal Jones)

General Session: June 8–10 from 9 a.m. to noon. Ages 7–17; $75

PHSC Comes Back To Win

Pasco-Hernando State rallied with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to come back and defeat St. Petersburg College 4-3 in Clearwater. Bob Peck (7-1) pitched seven strong innings allowing two runs, one earned on seven hits. He struck out two while walking none. Sean Fluke pitched the eighth allowing one run on two hits and Riley Choate picked up his third save of the year by pitching a scoreless ninth. Zach Hessinger and Jordan Ding each had two hits in the game. Hessinger also stole home in the top of first inning to put PHSC up 1-0. The win improves the team to 29-11. They will host South Florida State College on Friday at 2:00 p.m. It will be the final home game of the season.

Pasco-Hernando State College improved to 28-11 on the season by defeating IMG Academy 7-1 in Bradenton. Danny Rodriguez (10-2) picked up the win pitching five innings allowing two hits and one unearned run. He walked six and struckout eight. Tanner Thompson, Errol Whinnen, Adam Arrowood and Nick Donnell each pitched an inning of shutout baseball. Zach Hessinger and Justin Ortiz each went 3 for 5 to led the hitters. Jordan Feist and Christian Alicea added two hits each. The team will travel to St. Petersburg College in Clearwater tomorrow for a noon game. Bob Peck will be the starting pitcher.

Danny Rodriguez Breaks School's Pitching Record

PHSC's men’s baseball pitcher Danny Rodriguez surpassed Frankie Sanders (1994-95) as the college’s all-time leader for wins in a career with 18, on March 30. The 5'8", 140 lb. sophomore from Tampa Steinbrenner High School pitched a 5 hitter complete game in the 1-0 win at the College of Central Florida.

“Danny has been very instrumental in our success the past two years. He loves to play the game and it shows when he is on the mound,” said Steve Winterling, Head Men’s Baseball Coach and Athletic Director.

Rodriguez walked one and struck out four in his fourth complete game of the season, also lowering the team leading earned run average to 0.74. He has allowed only 44 hits in 73 innings of work while walking 15 and striking out 59.

PHSC scored their only run in the top of the ninth on Jordan Ding’s sacrifice fly ball to right field scoring Kevin Faulkner. The win improved the team to 23-7 on the season (as of April 7, 24-10).

PHSC Wins Big Over IMG

Pasco-Hernando State bounced back from yesterday's 5-4 loss at Lake Sumter State to defeat IMG Academy 12-5 at the West Campus. Starter Bob Peck (6-1) picked up the win by pitching five innings. He allowed only one run on five hits while striking out five. Aderly Perez led a 15 hit attack by going 3 for 5 with 2 RBIs. Alex Kranick, Danny Raynor, Jordan Feist and Michael Faul each had two hits in the game. PHSC improves to 27-11 on the season and will travel to IMG Academy in Bradenton on Friday for a 2:00 p.m. game. Danny Rodriguez will be the starting pitcher.

PHSC Rallies In Tenth

Pasco-Hernando State College took advantage of two Rollins College JV errors in the top of the tenth inning to score three runs and win 8-5 in Winter Park. Rollins had tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning on a three-run home run off reliever Danny Rodriguez. Rodriguez (9-2) got out of a jam in the bottom of the tenth to pick up the win. Trailing 2-0 going into the eighth, PHSC rallied to score five runs. Danny Raynor provided a bases-loaded triple to spark the rally. PHSC improves to 26-10 on the season and will travel to Lake Sumter State College in Leesburg on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. game. Chris McCormick will be the starting pitcher.

Disabilities Services Run, Walk, Roll 5K - Wesley Chapel

PHSC's Office of Disabilities Services will host a Run, Walk, Roll 5K on Sunday, April 26 at the Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch in Wesley Chapel. The race starts at 8 a.m. with a fun run for children beginning at 8:45 a.m. Community members as well as faculty, staff, and students are welcome to participate in the family friendly 5K event. All proceeds will benefit students seeking disabilities services at PHSC.

Following the race and fun run, an award presentation will be held with overall prizes to be awarded to top three in each category—male, female and wheelchair finishers.

Register no later than Monday, April 13 to receive race T-shirt and goody bag. Registration fee is $25 for the public and $15 for PHSC students; Fun Run event fee is $15. For more information call 727-816-3473.

Clarissa Lynch Breaks Record for Most Strikeouts in Season

Freshmen pitcher Clarissa Lynch broke the record for the most strikeouts in a season during the second game of a doubleheader against Broward College on Friday April 3. Kelly Powe established the record of 166 strikeouts in 2003. Clarissa ended this season with a total of 172 strikeouts.

PHSC Falls To St. Johns River

St. Johns River State scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come back and defeat Pasco-Hernando 11-5 in Palatka on Saturday. PHSC had taken a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh on a grand slam by Justin Ortiz. Starter Danny Rodriguez (8-2) took the loss pitching six innings allowing six earned runs on eight hits. He walked four and struckout four. Jordan Ding led the hitters going 3 for 4 with a double. Zack Hessinger also went 2 for 4 in the game.

PHSC (24-9) will travel to Hillsborough Community College on Tuesday. The 6 p.m. game will be played at George Steinbrenner Field. Admission is free. Chris McCormick (5-2, 1.18) will be the starting pitcher.

Pasco-Hernando State defeated Broward College 2-0 and 8-1 in Ft. Lauderdale on Friday. It was the third straight win for PHSC. The team ends the 2015 season 17-24.

PHSC Beats No. 6 Manatees on Road

Pasco-Hernando State College (24-8) defeated State College of Florida 4-3 in Bradenton. The Manatees are currently ranked sixth in the latest FCSAA poll. Reliever Bob Peck (3-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Tanner Thompson by pitching five strong innings. Peck allowed only one run on four hits while striking out two. Riley Choate picked up his second save of the season after entering the ninth with a runner on first and no outs. With two outs and the tying run on second base, right fielder Danny Raynor made a game saving diving catch on the warning track to preserve the win. Kevin Faulkner went two for four with a double and RBI. Jordan Ding and Jordan Feist also had run scoring doubles.

The team will travel to St. Johns River State College tomorrow for a 2 p.m. game.

PHSC Loses to No. 2 St. Johns River

Pasco-Hernando fell to St. Johns River State College 4-0 at the West Campus. The Pirates are ranked second in the latest NJCAA Division I poll. The Conquistadors entered as the fifth ranked team in NJCAA Division II. It was scoreless game until the seventh. After one out, the two batters reached on a single and walk. The first run scored on a throwing error by starter Chris McCormick and two other runs scored on a two-out single. McCormick (5-2) pitched 6.2 innings allowing three unearned runs on six hits while walking six and striking out six. Riley Choate pitched 1.1 innings striking out one. Nick Donnell closed out the ninth inning in relief of Errol Whinnen. Danny Raynor led the team at the plate going 2 for 3. PHSC managed only five hits in the game.

The team will travel to State College of Florida on Friday. Game time is 2:30 p.m.

Women's Softball Players to Tryout for Puerto Rico National Teams

Three players from PHSC's 2015 softball team have been invited to participate in a tryout for the Puerto Rican Women’s National and Junior Women’s National Softball teams. The tryout will be held June 8-13 at the International Softball Federation softball complex located in Plant City, Fla.

Sophomore, outfielder, Noemi Chavez, freshmen, outfielder, Jami Aguayo and freshman,pitcher/infielder, Brooke Gonzalez have accepted the invitation and will attend the week’s tryout. The tryout is the selection process for the Women’s National and Junior National teams which will compete in the following summer events:

ASA World Cup in Irvine, Cal.
Canadian Fastpitch Open in Surrey, Canada
Pan American Games in Toronto Canada
World Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Open House Events

PHSC is hosting open houses at each of its five campuses in April. The events are aimed at 2015 and 2016 high school graduates who are undecided on college plans and any potential students seeking higher education opportunities at PHSC.

Attendees will learn about the variety of certificate, associate and bachelor degree programs offered through the College. In addition, attendees will learn about the new bachelor’s degree programs now available at PHSC.The events also will provide opportunity for campus tours and offer information on admissions, financial aid, scholarships and the more than 50 clubs and organizations available.

North Campus in Brooksville, Wednesday, April 1 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in B104/105.
East Campus in Dade City, Thursday, April 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Conference Center, A240.

Rodriguez Sets Career Win Record

Danny Rodriguez (8-1) pitched a complete game, 5 hitter in today's 1-0 win at the College of Central Florida. PHSC Wins Eighth Straight Game

Pasco-Hernando State defeated the University of Tampa JV 5-0 on Sunday afternoon in Tampa. It was the eighth straight win for the Conquistadors who improved to 22-7 on the season. Starter Chris McCormick (5-1) picked up the win by pitching six shutout innings allowing six hits, walking two and striking out five. Danny Rodriguez pitched the final three innings to record the save. Aderly Perez and Alex Kranick each had two hits in the game. Perez also stole three bases.

The team will return to action next Friday at South Florida State College in Avon Park. Game time is 2 p.m. and Danny Rodriguez is the starting pitcher.

Pasco-Hernando State secured a spot in the NJCAA District Baseball Tournament in Kinston, N.C. with their 6-1 win over University of Tampa JV at the West Campus. The tournament runs May 8-12 with the winner advancing to the College World Series in Enid, Oklahoma. It's the fifth straight year the team has advanced to the tournament. PHSC won the tournament last season and finished fourth at the World Series.

Sophomore Bob Peck pitched eight strong innings allowing only one run on two hits. He walked four and struck out a season high eleven. Sophomore Errol Whinnen pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Sophomores Kevin Faulkner and Alex Kranick each had three hits in the game. Freshman Jordan Ding hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.

The team will travel to University of Tampa tomorrow for a noon game. Sophomore Chris McCormick is the scheduled starter.

Sophomore pitcher Danny Rodriguez (7-1) tied Frankie Sanders (1994-95) career mark of seventeen wins as Pasco-Hernando State defeated Seminole State 10-0 at the West Campus. Rodriguez pitched seven innings allowing six hits, walking one and striking out five. Adam Arrowood pitched a scoreless eighth and Sean Fluke struck out two of the three hitters he faced in the ninth. Christian Alicea went four for five with a double and 3 RBIs to lead a thirteen hit attack. Michael Faul also went 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

The team will host the University of Tampa JV on Saturday. Game time is noon.

PHSC Trustees Select Timothy Beard as Next President

The Pasco-Hernando State College District Board of Trustees concluded its presidential search this evening by voting to extend an offer to Timothy Beard, Ph.D., to become the college’s fourth president effective July 1, 2015.

Timothy Beard, Vice President of Student Development and Enrollment Management at PHSC, has worked for the college since 2007. Previously, he worked as vice president and dean of student affairs at the University of South Alabama in Mobile and director of student affairs and enrollment management at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee. Beard earned his doctoral degree in rehabilitation counseling with a special emphasis in higher education administration from Florida State University in Tallahassee. He also holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in rehabilitation counseling from Florida State University.

"We are pleased to extend an offer for the presidential position to Dr. Beard,” said Ed Blommel, PHSC District Board of Trustees and Presidential Search Committee Chair. “As a senior administrator at PHSC for the past eight years, he is already familiar with the college and has an understanding of its strategic goals and mission.”

Current PHSC President Katherine Johnson, Ed.D, will retire on June 30, 2015 and, pending the successful outcome of contract negotiations, Tim Beard is expected to begin his presidency on July 1, 2015.

Rodriguez Named FCSAA Pitcher Of The Week

Pasco-Hernando State College’s Danny Rodriguez is this week’s NJCAA Region8/FCSAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Rodriguez, a sophomore from Lutz, Fla., was 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA in two appearances during the voting period. Rodriguez picked up two complete-game victories, including a five-hit shutout against Three Rivers on March 10, in which he struck out nine. On March 14, he allowed only four hits and struck out nine in an 8-1 win over NJCAA (DII) No. 19 Lincoln Land. For the week, he struck out 18 and allowed only four walks in 18 innings of work and held opponents to a .153 batting average. With the two victories, Rodriguez is also just one win away from tying Pasco-Hernando State’s career record of 17.

Pasco-Hernando State defeated Seminole State College 8-3 in Lake Mary on Monday afternoon. Starter Chris McCormick (4-1) picked up the win pitching eight innings allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits while striking out six. Errol Whinnen pitched the ninth inning to close out the game. Danny Raynor went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs to lead a 10 hit attack. Zach Hessinger and Justin Ortiz each had two hits in the game. The win improved PHSC to 19-7 on the season.

The two teams will meet in New Port Richey at 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

Rodriguez Picks 15th Career Win

Sophomore Danny Rodriguez improved to 5-1 on the season by pitching a complete game in today's 1-0 win over Three Rivers Community College. Rodriguez allowed only five hits and struck out nine. He is two wins shy of tying All-American Frankie Sanders for most all-time. Sanders won seventeen games during the 1994-95 seasons. Zack Hessinger drove in Jordan Feist with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning for the games only run. The win improved PHSC to 13-6.

Women's History Month—Women's Leadership Panel

PHSC will celebrate Women’s History Month with a panel-led discussion on the topic “Taking the stage, how to communicate with courage and confidence.” The event will be held on Friday, March 20 from 6 to 8 p.m. in rooms B104/105 at the North Campus in Brooksville.

In keeping with the National Women’s History Project’s theme “Weaving the Stories of Women’s Lives,” prominent Hernando County women will discuss their personal career journeys and the popular book Taking the Stage: How Women Can Speak Up, Stand Out, and Succeed by Judith Humphrey.

The event is sponsored by the North Campus Student Government Association and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs and Equity Services. The panel discussion is open to students, faculty, staff and the community free of charge.

Rodriguez pitched seven innings allowing seven hits and one earned run while striking out seven. Tanner Thompson came and pitched two shutout innings. Jordan Feist led the hitters going 2 for 3. Aderly Perez singled in the teams only run in the seventh inning. PHSC's Rao Musunuru, M.D. Art Gallery will exhibit Moments in Place by photographer Joseph Gamble from March 17 through April 16, 2015. The community is invited to an opening reception sponsored by the PHSC Student Government Association, on Tuesday, March 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the gallery located on PHSC’s West Campus in New Port Richey.

Gamble grasps a moment in time and portrays it with great depth and truth through his architectural perspective of places and people stateside and abroad. Gamble will discuss his work in a special presentation, followed by a Q&A on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 11 a.m. in the Conference Center on West Campus.

The baseball team fell to 8-3 on the season as they lost on the road at St. Petersburg College. Justin Ortiz hit a grand slam in the top of the 5th inning to give PHSC a 5-1 lead, but St. Petersburg rallied off starter Chris McCormick to take a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth. PHSC rallied to tie the score in the top of the seventh inning before SPC scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth against relievers Riley Choate (1-2) and Bob Peck. Ortiz led the hitters going 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs. The team will host Davenport University JV (Mich.) on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

A high school dropout who received his GED, Smith went on to attend and graduate from one of the Magnificent Twelve: Gibbs Junior College in St. Petersburg. Smith earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Florida A&M University and his doctorate in higher education at Florida State University. He was president of FAMU from 1977-1985. Smith was named International Team Leader for Education in the Republic of South Africa. While in South Africa, Smith helped establish the first American-style, community college. Since 2002, Smith founded the Dr. Walter L. Smith Library to serve the community and provide students a place to learn.

Other Black History Month activities include a panel discussion featuring PHSC African-American alumni to be held on Wednesday, February 25, 6 p.m. at East Campus, Dade City, Building A-240.

Pasco-Hernando State (4-2) lost a tough 1-0 game at Santa Fe College (8-1) today in Gainesville. The Conquistadors could manage only three hits in the game against three Saint pitchers. PHSC starter Chris McCormick had another solid performance pitching seven innings, allowing six hits while striking out nine. Riley Choate (0-1) pitched a scoreless eighth, but allowed two hits and a walk in the ninth. Danny Rodriguez came in relief with one out, but allowed a single scoring the only run of the game.

Pasco-Hernando State College lost both games against Hillsborough Community College in Plant City on Tuesday night by scores of 6-5 and 8-0. In game one, Oliva Nase hit a two-run home run and Noemi Chavez went 2 for 3 with a triple. Hillsborough rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. The Quista's were shut out in game two as Clarissa Lynch (2-2) was the pitcher of record in both games. The team is now 2-4 on the season.

PHSC Trustees Select Presidential Finalists

Pasco-Hernando State College’s presidential search continued this week with two consecutive days of video conferencing interviews of the top 12 candidates. Following the interviews, PHSC’s District Board of Trustees met Wednesday evening, February 11, 2015 to discuss and select the four finalists for the position of PHSC president.

“All 12 candidates are qualified, impressive leaders in higher education,” said Len Johnson, Chair of the District Board of Trustees. “Choosing the finalists among such an accomplished slate of candidates was a difficult task indeed—especially to succeed Dr. Katherine Johnson, who has served PHSC as an exemplary president for more than a decade.”

After careful deliberation, the board selected Timothy Beard, Vice President of Student Development and Enrollment Management, Pasco-Hernando State College, New Port Richey, Fla.; Roberto Gutierrez, President, Klamath Community College, Klamath Falls, Ore.; Rhonda Tracy, Interim President/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, West Virginia University at Parkersburg, Parkersburg, W.Va.; and Tonjua Williams, Senior Vice President,Student Services, St. Petersburg College, St. Petersburg, Fla.

The four finalists will advance to on-campus interviews, to be scheduled through March. The board hopes to announce the fourth president of PHSC later this spring.

Katherine Johnson, Ed.D, will retire on June 30, 2015 and the new president is expected to take office on July 1.

Pasco-Hernando State (4-1) scored three runs over the final two innings to come back and defeat Rollins College JV 4-3 at the West Campus. Trailing 3-2 in the ninth, Kevin Faulkner drove in Zach Hessinger with a single to tie the game and Alex Kranick laid down a squeeze bunt to score Justin Ortiz with the winning run. Tanner Thompson (1-0) picked up the win by pitching the ninth. Starter Bob Peck pitched the first five innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out eight. Riley Choate, Errol Whinnen, Nick Donnell and Tanner Thompson combined to pitch the final four innings allowing no runs and one hit.

The team will travel to Santa Fe College in Gainesville on Friday for a 3 p.m. game. Chris McCormick (1-1) will get the start.

PHSC Baseball Splits Over the Weekend

Pasco-Hernando State College split a couple of games over the weekend at the West Campus. In the home opener on Saturday, PHSC rallied to beat IMG Academy 2-1. Danny Rodriguez (1-0) started and picked up the win by pitching eight innings allowing one run on three hits. Bob Peck picked up the save. Trailing 1-0 into the bottom of fifth, Michael Faul drove in a run with a single and Bobby Anderson walked with bases loaded for the winning RBI.

On Sunday, Palm Beach took advantage of six PHSC errors to win 5-0. Starter Chris McCormick (1-1) pitched five innings allowing four unearned runs on seven hits while striking out nine. Palm Beach scored the other unearned run off reliever Tanner Thompson, who pitched two innings allowing one hit, walked two and struck out one. Errol Whinnen pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Adam Arrowood pitched the ninth allowing just a hit.

The team is currently 3-1 on the season and will host Rollins College JV on Wednesday. Bob Peck (1-0) will be the starting pitcher. Game time is set for 3 p.m.

PHSC has developed a new Community Awareness Series in the spring term for students, faculty, staff and the community to learn about services provided by local agencies. The sessions highlight health and human services programs available in Pasco County, including public benefit, nutrition and pregnancy services.

Alice Delgardo, Manager of Community Outreach, United Way of Pasco County, will present the first seminar in the series on Friday, February 6 at 10 a.m.

Additional seminars include: Big Brother, Big Sisters on February 27; Pasco County Community Services, Elderly Nutrition Division, on March 6; Department of Health in Pasco County, Nutrition Services, on March 27; Oasis Pregnancy Care Center on April 3; and Healthy Start Coalition of Pasco County on April 24.

The Health and Human Services seminars meet the critical need for the community to better understand social service programs and services available to them. The seminars are offered at no cost and will provide the college community with access to a number of agencies and organizations designed to assist the residents of Pasco County.

Bob Peck (1-0) picked up the win pitching five innings allowing two runs on three hits. Riley Choate earned his first save by pitching four innings of hitless baseball. Zach Hessinger led the hitters going 3 for 5 with a double. Kevin Faulkner drove in two runs with a 2 RBI double in the top of the eighth inning. Softball Team Opens Season 2-2

The Lady Quista softball team completed their opening weekend tournament in Clearwater with a record of 2-2 at the JUCO Classic. On Friday, Clarissa Lynch recorded a 6-0 shutout win over Wake Technical Community College. Lynch had ten strikeouts as the Quistas scored five runs in the fifth inning and one in the sixth. The Quistas were defeated by Richard Bland Community College in the nightcap by a score of 9-4. Brooke Gonzalez (0-1) took the loss on the mound.

On Saturday, the Quistas defeated Kaskaskia College 2-0 as Clarissa Lynch recorded her second shutout of the season. Chelsi Lopresto (2 for 2/RBI) scored the first run in the fifth inning and gave the Quistas an insurance run by driving in a run in the sixth. Broward College defeated the Quistas' 2-1 scoring in the bottom of the seventh in a very competitive game. Brooke Gonzalez (0-2) took the loss.

The team will travel to Hillsborough Community College on February 10 for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.

Two Volleyball Players Named All-Americans

The NJCAA released their 2014-15 Div II All-Americans. Sophomore Jordan Bickett, outside hitter, was named second team All-American and sophomore Logan Miller, opposite hitter, was named Honorable Mention All-American.

Jordan recorded 470 kills, .236 hitting efficiency, 19 aces, 418 digs, and 73 blocks for the season and Logan recorded 502 kills, averaging 3.32 kills per set, .268 hitting efficiency and 68 blocks for the season.

PHSC Splits Matches On Opening Day of National Tournament

Fourth seeded Pasco-Hernando State College (39-5) defeated Waubonsee Community College 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-22) in the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz. on Thursday afternoon. The win moved the team into a winners bracket game against No. 5 Columbus State Community College of Ohio on Thursday night.

PHSC (39-6) came out strong winning the first set 25-22, but fell in the final three sets 12-25, 23-25 and 12-25. The loss moved the team into a match with Des Moines Area Community College at 4:30 p.m. EST on Friday. The winner of that match will advance to the finals for fifth place on Saturday. Cross Country Team Places 18th in NJCAA 5k

The women's cross country team finished 18th place in the NJCAA 5k race. The course was challenging, the weather was cold and there were high winds but the ladies ran strong. The team was led by sophomore Melody Yero finishing in 19:58 and freshman Angela Cruz finishing in 19:59.

This is the first time all season the ladies broke into the 19s. Alyssa DeLigio was the third finisher for the team in 20:18. Rounding out the scoring were sophomore Kristen Dunlap in 20:43 and freshman Roxanna Caballero in 20:47. Samantha Martinez and Elise Cedre ran as sixth and seventh runners with times of 20:49 and 20:52.

The 18th place finish matches the 2013 team finish.

Volleyball Prepares for Post Season

The PHSC women's volleyball team concluded their regular season matches with College's best ever overall regular season record of 35-5. Coach Kim Whitney also reached a milestone this season marking her 300th career win. Two players this season received FCSAA player of the week accolades, both for defensive player of the week, Melina Staengle and Toni Imbimbo. The final NJCAA National ranking concluded with PHSC at No. 4.

This week the team begins post season where they will travel to play in the District P, Region 10,8 Championship Tournament hosted by Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C. The tournament will run from Friday, November 7 through Saturday, November 8. The team will face off against the No. 6 ranked team and will need to win three consecutive matches to qualify for the NJCAA National Championship Tournament hosted by Phoenix College in Phoenix, Arizona.

Today was the Quistas' first game opener. They succeeded with a win over Clearwater Christian College. Clearwater Christian College 66, PHSC 74. Basketball Scrimmage Fundraiser a Success

The Quistas played their last scrimmage game Saturday. The final score was Tampa Swish 114, PHSC 79 The top player for the Quistas was Taylor Breck with 24 points and 8 rebounds.

The game was a fundraiser for former player (1988-1990) and assistant coach Brent Cooper (2000-2001). The game raised $600 to aid Coach Cooper with medical expenses. We wish him well on his health.

The Quistas open with their first game on November 1 against Clearwater Christian College, at home, at 4 p.m.

The Quistas played tough against Trinity College during Tuesday night's scrimmage. However, they lost by four points, Trinity College 98, PHSC 94.

Run with the Quistas a Big Success

The 10th annual Run with the Quistas 5k event was a huge success. Over 120 runners participated in the 5k event. There were many alumni that came back to participate in the race. Tyler Mattera won the race in a time of 17:30. For the females, alumni Courtney McAuliffe took the title in 20:17. The first runner for the lady Quista cross country team was Elise Cedre in a time of 20:22. The next seven places were members from the team with sophomore Sammi Martinez setting a new personal best in 20:31 to take third female overall. Angela Cruz (20:44), Melody Yero (20:47) and Roxanna Caballero (20:58) rounded out the top five. This is the first time all season the top five runners have all been under the 21-minute mark.

The race also had a faculty division with 10 members of the PHSC faculty and staff participating in the race. Timothy Moore won the faculty division with Bobby Yancy and Steve Winterling taking second and third respectively.

The ladies were back into the top 25 rankings this week and will not have another 5k until the national meet held on November 8 in Texas.

Volleyball Team Raises Over $1,000 for Breast Cancer Awareness

On October 7 the women’s volleyball team hosted Elizabethtown College (Pa.) at a Dig Pink event to raise money for the Sideout Foundation. The Lady Quistas won the match 3-1.

Both teams and fans wore pink to the match to show their support for breast cancer awareness. Donations were made by students, faculty, staff, and fans. “The support we received from so many people made the event very special”, said Coach Kim Whitney.” The event raised over $1,000 for the Sideout Foundation.

The Sideout Foundation awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing patient services to breast cancer patients and their families. Direct donations to the Sideout Foundation are open online until the end of October.

Cross Country Competes in Disney Race

This past weekend the women’s cross country team finally faced some junior college competition when they raced at Disney’s Wide World of Sports for their Invitational. The ladies stepped it up a notch by placing eighth among 29 two- and four-year schools.

If you turned away for too long, you could have missed the top five runners as they finished within 28 seconds of each other. Leading the way was freshman Elise Cedre in a time of 20:55. She was followed closely by freshman Roxanna Caballero (21:02) and sophomore Melody Yero (21:04). Not too far behind were the Quistas' number four and five runners with Angela Cruz finishing in 21:08 and sophomore Kristen Dunlap in 21:23. The team ran an outstanding race.

The men's basketball team hosted 15 former players at their recent alumni game. The former players defeated the 2014-15 squad 96-86. The successful reunion for former athletes and former coach Bobby Bowman took place on October 11 at the West Campus.

Top PHSC players were: Shane Temara with 22 points nd nine rebounds; Taylor Breck with 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists; and Je Quan DeLugo with 14 points and eight rebounds.

Cross Country Places Eighth at FLRunners.com Race

It has been three weeks since the PHSC women’s cross country team competed due to a bye week and the canceled flight to Chicago on September 26, so they were ready to race at the flrunners.com Invitational on October 3. Humid temperatures and a soggy course left the times a little slower than planned but they edged out Florida International University by one point to place eighth out of 14 teams.

Leading the way, freshman Roxanna Caballero in 21:44 but followed closely behind by sophomore Kristen Dunlap in 21:46. Alyssa DeLigio ran a smart race to place third for the Quista runners in 21:53. Rounding out the scoring were freshman Angela Cruz (22:10) and Elise Cedre (22:34).

The next meet for the ladies will be October 11 at Disney’s Wide World of Sports. This is the first meet all season where the team will face some other junior college competition.

Lady Quistas Qualify for the District P/Region 8,10 Tournament

The Lady Quistas went 3-1 at the South Florida State Volleyball Tournament this past weekend. They defeated Webber university JV, St. John's River State College and Clearwater Christian College and lost to Indian River State College.

The Quistas were led by captain Jordan Bickett who recorded 60 kills with a .315 hitting efficiency, four aces and 38 digs. The team's overall record of 20-4 has officially qualified them for the District P/Region 8,10 tournament which will be held in Wilmington, N.C. at Cape Fear Community College.

This week the team hosts a home match on Tuesday against Florida College and travels this weekend to North Carolina to Catawba Valley Community College's Tournament.

Volleyball Team to Host Dig Pink Event

The women's volleyball team will host a Dig Pink match against Elizabethtown College (Pa.) on Tuesday, October 7 at the West Campus.

Dig Pink T-shirts will be sold by PHSC’s volleyball team members through the month of October and at the game for $10 each. Raffle tickets will also be sold for prize baskets at the event for $1 each or six for $5. All proceeds from T-shirt sales and raffle ticket sales will go to the Sideout Foundation. This foundation awards grants to medical research organizations and entities dedicated to providing patient services to breast cancer patients and their families.

Basketball and Cheerleading Teams Join Coastal Cleanup

The basketball and cheerleading teams teamed up for a day of community service at the Pasco Coastal Cleanup on September 20. All athletic teams commit to doing one community service event each year. This year, Coastal Clean Up in Pasco County was chosen by the basketball and cheerleading teams.

The basketball players pulled 35 tires out of the gulf at the Palms Preserve area as well as picking up trash in the area. The cheerleaders picked up trash in the same area.

Cross Country Team Endures Tough Course at UT Invitational

The 20th ranked PHSC Cross Country team raced on a tough course for the second meet of the season at the University of Tampa Early Bird Invitational. The team was led by freshman Roxanna Caballero with a 38th place finish in 21:27. She was followed closely by sophomore Melody Yero (42nd) who finished in a time of 21:36. Rounding out the scoring for the team was Kristen Dunlap (55th) 22:01, Angela Cruz (58th) 22:09 and Alyssa DeLigio (62nd) 22:18. The team placed sixth among nine teams.

The ladies have an off week before heading to the College of DuPage Invitational in Warrenville, Ill. on September 26. They will face their first NJCAA competition at this race.

The team encourages everyone to sign up for the Tenth Annual Run with the Quistas which takes place on Sunday,October 19 at 8 a.m.

Cross Country Off to Good Start at USF Invitational

The 2014 season is off to a great start for the women’s cross country team. On Friday they participated in the USF Invitational on “The Claw” golf course in Tampa. The team ran well and freshman Elise Cedre led the way on the muddy course finishing in a time of 21:17. The next four runners were within 44 seconds of her with Roxanna Caballero (21:29), Melody Yero (21:45), Kristen Dunlap (21:46) and Angela Cruz (22:01) completing the scoring. Results were sent to the NJCAA and should put the Quistas in position to be ranked in the top 10 to start of the season.

Next up for the team is the University of Tampa Invitational on September 12 at Sydney Dover Trails in Brandon. The team runs at 6:40 p.m.

Quistas' Battle with Santa Fe Ends in Loss

In front of a crowd of over 800 fans last night, the PHSC Conquistadors battled a well fought five-set thriller losing to Santa Fe College to bring their record to 2-1. The team was lead by Melina Staengle who had double-double figures recording 16 kills and 20 digs, Logan Miller 10 kills, Jordan Bickett 9 kills with hitting efficiency of .438 and Teddi Wright with 49 assists.

The Conquistador's opened with a 23-25 loss in the first set, came back to win the second set 25-23, lost the third 16-25. They bounced back in the fourth 26-24, and finished with a loss in the fifth 8-15. An archive of the match can be seen at ihigh.com/santafesaints.

PHSC’s Melina Staengle is this week's NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. Staengle, a sophomore from Sindelfingen, Germany, averaged 3.8 digs per set and 0.4 blocks per set over two matches, helping the Quistas to 3-1 wins over Indian River State and St. Petersburg. Staengle recorded double-double digs in each match, including 17 against St. Petersburg.

The 2014-15 Rao Musunuru, M.D. Art Gallery’s Elemental Grandeur exhibit line-up has been announced and opens with The Creative Works, presented by The Red Apple School, on August 21. Cross Country Runner Wins Award

Sophomore Judith Young won the Award for Exemplary Academic Achievement for having an excellent grade point average for all four semesters while competing for the cross country and half marathon team.

Judith’s overall GPA while at PHSC was a 3.7. Judith was an integral part of the 2012 and 2013 Cross Country teams. She was also on the half marathon team for the 2013 season. Judith plans to continue her academic and athletic endeavors at the University of South Florida this fall.
